Model United Nations

This week Allan Chiduza, a Lower Sixth student at Kuwadzana High 1, submitted a report on an event that took place last month.
Kuwadzana High 1 hosted the Model United Nations day for 2011 on 29 June this year.
This educative and intriguing event was coordinated by the Zimbabwe United Nations Association.Many schools from Harare were present, such as Harare Girls’ High, ZRP Boarding School, Morgan High and Cranborne Boys’ High.

The national anthem marked the inception of the event. This was led by the Kuwadzana 1 High School Choir.
“The environment has already welcomed you,” Mrs Ndlovu, the Headmistress of Kuwadzana 1 said as she welcomed the audience.
The United Nations (UN) co-ordinator for Cote d’Ivoire, Mr Marcellin Herpie shed light on the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs) to be met by 2015 globally.
“Challenges affecting humanity, peace, security and mostly human rights will hinder the MDG’s target,” Herpie said as he gave further background on the MDGs.
The debate topic on the MDGs was opened by the headboy, Alfred Jaricha.
Some of the MDG goals include:
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
The Secretary-General was from ZRP High School and Tariro Muradya was the rapporteur from Kuwadzana High 1.
Ambassadors from various countries, chosen by the students ,were there to represent the different countries.
The discussion was on the 66th session of the General Assembly, where different views were aired.
Mr Fisher Mutawarira, Chairperson of the Zimbabwe United Nations (ZUNA) gave an overview at the event, while Mrs Nengoshama from Morgan High School wrapped up the day with a vote of thanks.
