Your weekend diary

May 28, 2011

There must be something significant about today, with two events specifically targeted at teens. The afternoon begins with a Teens Braai at the Harare Exhibition Park (Showgrounds), shortly followed by the second edition of Miss Teen Zimbabwe being held at the 7 Arts theatre in Harare at 7pm.

The Teens Braai is being hosted by the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (Zas) and the main objective is to have an annual event specifically catering for teenagers.
Zas marketing and public relations manager Sibonginkosi Muteyi said: “Most teens want their own entertainment. Even though some teens attend Harare Agricultural Show with their family, we felt there was need to create an event specifically for teenagers, to promote networking in this age group and give them something exclusive to own.”

Braai packs and drinks will be available to buy at the event and teenagers can expect to be entertained by popular Power FM DJ Chillie (Hazvinei Sakarombe).

Games and competitions will be held throughout the day, with some organisations that have partnered with Zas giving away prizes.

Teens can expect games like digital boxing rings, rolling balls, dance competitions, have a chance to take on DJ Chillie’s role, and just take time to meet friends, socialise and have fun.

The event is exclusively for teenagers so parents and guardians can expect good security at all times. The event ends on a high note with fireworks at 6pm.

Expect to have a lot of fun. Teens, see you there!

This week we also celebrated Africa Day on May 25 (Wednesday) and I received a poem from a reader paying tribute to this special day.

Be Happy Africa
Be happy Africa
For you’re the cradle of mankind
even Jesus called the Christ once walked through
Your wonderful valleys,
So be happy Africa,
My beautiful Africa

How I love to know that
You’re mine forever, my Africa
Be happy Africa for you’re
God’s art, creation
My beautiful Africa
Long live my Africa!

Africa, Africa, Africa
I love my beautiful Africa.
